Solar Water Pump Demo
www.solardave.com Karlis Viceps: We are all volunteers from a non profit called New Mexico Solar Energy Association (NMSEA) that is a state wide group and we have a local Taos chapter – I was president of the state wide chapter. That is a chapter of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) out of Boulder. SolarDave: That is actually where I am from. Karlis Viceps: We always had a annual conference and it always feel like we were preaching to the choir. The buddies that you all know that already know stuff about solar and wind, doing green building and so forth – get together at the annual conference and it was great to learn more but we felt like we were not getting the outreach that we need to do. In the mid to late 90’s when I was president of the state organization we really went after some grant money and fundraising and one of the big results is this sun chaser which is a mobile class room to travel around the state (New Mexico) to educate kids and go to the state fair and educate the adults like events like today (Taos Earth Day). We’ll have kids playing with the water fountain (solar pump) the PV thing and adults asking us all sorts of questions – I can hook up the wiring right now – I didn’t have water in there before so I didn’t want to burn out the pump. This is a simple demonstration of how sun gets converted directly into electricity. We still may have a little bit of shade on that – this is still fairly early in the morning.
